Gwendoline Dirk: Long-time teacher seeks administrator seat in MH’s public school division

Gwendoline Dirk hopes to build on her many years of experience in the education system as a board administrator for the Medicine Hat Public Schools Division.

Dirk graduated from the University of Victoria in 1986, then spent 33 years teaching in different school systems at different levels; everything from art in grade 5 to English and social studies in grade 12.

The latter part of his career was spent teaching adult development at Medicine Hat College for 13 years. The division closed in June 2020, so Dirk decided to retire. That same month, she also obtained a Masters of Education from the University of Lethbridge, specializing in Curriculum and Assessment.

Dirk has spent the last year deciding what his next step should be, while volunteering with Saamis Immigration.

“I decided not to substitute myself at this particular point, partly because of the pandemic and partly because I really needed to do some soul searching in terms of what I wanted to do. I decided that I didn’t want to start teaching again because I believe it’s time to leave these jobs open to the next generation of teachers.

Dirk says working at the school board is one way she could help.

“This is the most important with the possible challenges due to the pandemic,” Dirk said. “I think due to school closures, online learning situations, changed assessment practices and maybe an ongoing challenge for us as it’s not over yet it can there may be learning deficit issues.

“I believe that with my experience and expertise, I will be able to bring a perspective on how best to meet these challenges. ”

Dirk said the first thing she would do would be just listen and learn.

“I am very passionate and hardworking. I am very focused when I take something. I love to serve and help where I can, ”Dirk said. “I feel I have a wealth of information to contribute. I am a very creative and innovative thinker. I have a lot of tools at my disposal and a lot of experience in education.
